Lawton Undergraduate Minority Retention Grant

The Lawton Undergraduate Minority Retention Grant is funded by the State of Wisconsin and provides financial assistance to designated under represented minority undergraduate students to improve opportunity for retention and graduation and to reduce the reliance on student loans.

To be eligible, you must be:

  1. A resident of the state of Wisconsin;
  2. A member of one of the following minority groups (as shown in your eSIS information) who are under represented in higher education: African-American, Latino/a, Native American Indian or from a designated Southeast Asian minority group (Cambodian, Hmong, Laotian or Vietnamese) and who entered the United States after 1975;
  3. Not have received your first bachelor’s degree;
  4. Will be at sophomore, junior or senior standing by the beginning of next Fall Semester;
  5. Have establish and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.25 or better;
  6. Not be on academic or financial aid warning, probation or suspension status;
  7. And enroll for a full-time academic credit load (12 or more credit hours) each semester in which you receive the grant; and
  8. Demonstrate financial need as evidenced by the results of your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the upcoming academic year by May 1.

In addition, as a Lawton Undergraduate Minority Retention Grant recipient, you must agree to the following :

  • Meet with the Lawton Grant coordinator in the Center of Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging a minimum of twice each semester;
  • Participate in or attend a minimum of three program approved/sponsored activities each semester; and
  • Attend a required financial literacy seminar within the first year of the Lawton Grant award.

Students who do not meet the eligibility criteria or do not fulfill the participation requirement will lose eligibility for the Grant in the following semester.

Lawton Grant awards range from $1,000 – $2,000 per semester and are renewable for up to 3 years.
